What does CARE mean when we say, ‘We put gender at the center?’ https://www.care.org/news-and-stories/perspectives/what-does-care-mean-when-we-say-we-put-gender-at-the-center/ Fri, 18 Aug 2023 17:40:24 +0000 https://www.care.org/?p=29879 CARE's approach to gender equality goes beyond merely including more women and girls; it focuses on addressing the root causes of poverty and inequality, ensuring that all people have equal rights and opportunities. Through various initiatives and projects across more than 100 countries, CARE has helped 16.5 million women and girls since 2015, emphasizing the importance of women's voices, safety, and leadership, and integrating gender into all aspects of their work, including emergency responses, advocacy, and grassroots action.

Becoming a better partner: how CARE is turning pledges into reality https://www.care.org/news-and-stories/perspectives/becoming-a-better-partner-how-care-is-turning-pledges-into-reality/ Fri, 31 Mar 2023 17:31:48 +0000 https://www.care.org/?p=27373 CARE has made some big commitments to localization, decolonization, and anti-racism. We’ve signed the Pledge for Change to drive more decision making and resources to the places that are most affected by crisis and poverty. We believe in being locally led, and globally connected, which implies changing the way we think about partnerships.

What about Somalia? https://www.care.org/news-and-stories/perspectives/what-about-somalia/ Wed, 29 Mar 2023 13:34:27 +0000 https://www.care.org/?p=27265 For the past two years, I have seen communities across Somalia that have lost everything and do not know where the next meal will come from. My team and I have been raising the alarm for more than a year on the impending drought, always haunted by the 2011 famine in Somalia that led to the loss of a quarter of a million lives. When the crisis began, we were hopeful that the global community would spring into action to keep history from repeating itself. But we were wrong. Statement followed statement, photo followed photo, and urgent interview followed urgent interview, but two years later the Somalia response is still underfunded. And the situation is getting worse.

Frontline health workers care for all of us. How can we show our care for them? https://www.care.org/news-and-stories/perspectives/international-womens-day-frontline-health-workers-care-for-all-of-us-how-can-we-show-our-care-for-them/ Wed, 08 Mar 2023 13:28:48 +0000 https://www.care.org/?p=26976 The best way to celebrate International Women’s Day is to give women – especially women health workers – our support and recognition on this day, and every day throughout the year. In the words of Michelle Obama, “Communities, and countries, and ultimately the world are only as strong as the health of their women.”

The pandemic has hit women & girls the hardest. Here’s what the U.S. can do to help. https://www.care.org/news-and-stories/perspectives/the-pandemic-has-hit-women-girls-the-hardest-heres-what-the-u-s-can-do-to-help/ Thu, 08 Dec 2022 21:35:44 +0000 https://www.care.org/?p=25274 In September, The National Security Council released its updated COVID-19 Global Response and Recovery Framework, which provides a comprehensive overview of the United States Government’s current approach to addressing COVID-19 and strengthening health systems. Shockingly, this framework neglects to integrate solutions that account for gendered discrepancies in impacts and needs. In fact, the Framework neglects to include specific actions with regards to women and girls at all. The world needs the United States to do better. At CARE, we’re calling on the Biden Administration to include gender equality as a core component of its pandemic response.

CARE’s COP27 response: One step forward, but many more needed https://www.care.org/news-and-stories/perspectives/cares-cop27-response-one-step-forward-but-many-more-needed/ Tue, 06 Dec 2022 18:25:48 +0000 https://www.care.org/?p=25165 As the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (“COP27”) commenced, CARE made its position clear: for climate justice to be justice at all, it must be gender justice. We are disappointed to say that while COP27 made some progress recognizing the importance of gender justice, attendees ultimately took no collective action

Four ways gender-based violence is making the hunger crisis worse (and what you can do to help break the cycle) https://www.care.org/news-and-stories/perspectives/four-ways-gender-based-violence-is-making-the-hunger-crisis-worse-and-what-you-can-do-to-help-break-the-cycle/ Tue, 22 Nov 2022 23:00:52 +0000 https://www.care.org/?p=24972 Rates of gender-based violence increased dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the crisis has only been compounded by the pressures of an ongoing global hunger catastrophe fueled by climate change, resource scarcity, and increased commodity costs. This violence is rooted in gender inequality—and without addressing inequality, women will continue to be both hungry and at risk of violence. CARE’s new report, GBV & Food Insecurity, highlights the many ways these two challenges are inextricably linked.
