Integrating Local Knowledge in Humanitarian and Development Programming: Perspectives of Global Women Leaders

This report examines local knowledge integration in the context of global development and humanitarian aid work. It builds upon a recently published report by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) called Integrating Local Knowledge in Development Programming. That report sought to “share knowledge of how development donors and implementing organizations leverage local knowledge to inform programming. This study aims to extend the original methods to better understand grassroots actors’ own interpretations of local knowledge and its integration into programming in their communities. It examines the perspectives of 29 grassroots leaders from women-led organizations around the world, looking deeply at the ways in which they conceptualize local knowledge and local knowledge stakeholders, their approaches to designing their own projects based on local knowledge, and their experiences sharing knowledge with international actors and donors. This builds the broader evidence base on integrating local knowledge to incorporate the perspectives of grassroots actors into the same conversation as the original study.

Right to Food, Water and Nutrition: Research Digest – Issue 2

The CARE FWS team runs a periodic ‘Research Digest’ informed by CARE’s Right to Food, Water, and Nutrition (RFWN) learning agenda which focuses on generating, analyzing, and presenting evidence and on expanding the impact of that evidence – both for program quality and influencing purposes. The purpose of these Research Digests is to increase awareness and understanding of our research across all teams within FWS and more broadly within CARE. The Digest will capture and summarize evidence from CARE programming on food and water systems as well as external evidence relevant to our programming and priorities.

Coalition News: She Thrives, Ethiopia

This is an E-newsletter developed by CARE Ethiopia, She Thrives project. The E-newsletter describes the First-Ever National Child Protection and Policy Advocacy Coalition initiated by CARE She Thrives project and Woord en Daad, INGO. The aim of the coalition is to create an organizational capacity to represent the collective voice of local and international civil society organizations in support of the government initiative to combat child labor through policy and socioeconomic approaches by aligning efforts and mobilizing technical and financial resources.

Sex, age (and more) still matter: Data collection, analysis, and use in humanitarian practice

The humanitarian community has come a long way since the first Sex and Age Matter report was published in 2011. In the new report, Sex, age (and more) still matter, we show how that progress has been uneven. The collection and analysis of sex-, age, and disability disaggregated data do not consistently inform programming and require further commitment and investment.

Evidence of priorities, nature and size of Bangladesh government and donors’ investment in girls’ priorities and SDG-5

CARE has conducted a study to analyze the evidence on girls' priorities and investments focusing on eliminating CEFM, including, but not limited to SDG-5. The research identified the nature and size of Bangladesh Government and donors’ investment in girls’ priorities and identified the gaps between girls’ priorities and these investments alongside specific recommendations to fill those gaps.

Tipping Point Social Norms Findings

In South Asia and around the world, child early and forced marriage (CEFM) is a symptom of deeply rooted gender inequalities. The Tipping Point Initiative focuses on addressing this root cause by promoting the rights of adolescent girls through community-level programming in Nepal and Bangladesh. This brief presents the findings from baseline evaluation on the five social norms that Tipping Point programming focus.
