Building Capital in Crisis: CARE’s VSLA in Emergencies increase savings and solidarity

August 14, 2023

Since 2017, CARE has piloted and refined our VSLA in Emergencies model to reach people in need of humanitarian assistance and provide an approach that can reduce long term vulnerability while being more sustainable. In this second report on the VSLA in Emergencies (VSLAiE) pilot research, we provide insights from three pilots in Yemen, Syria, and Jordan. This includes the end of pilot findings from Syria and Jordan as well as the results from our Yemen sustainability study. As a result of funding from IDEAL Small Grants Program, CARE has been able to return to communities in Yemen, one year after the end of the first cycle and observe the sustainability of the gains from the pilot project.

Integrating Local Knowledge in Humanitarian and Development Programming: Perspectives of Global Women Leaders

August 9, 2023

This report examines local knowledge integration in the context of global development and humanitarian aid work. It builds upon a recently published report by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) called Integrating Local Knowledge in Development Programming. That report sought to “share knowledge of how development donors and implementing organizations leverage local knowledge to inform programming. This study aims to extend the original methods to better understand grassroots actors’ own interpretations of local knowledge and its integration into programming in their communities. It examines the perspectives of 29 grassroots leaders from women-led organizations around the world, looking deeply at the ways in which they conceptualize local knowledge and local knowledge stakeholders, their approaches to designing their own projects based on local knowledge, and their experiences sharing knowledge with international actors and donors. This builds the broader evidence base on integrating local knowledge to incorporate the perspectives of grassroots actors into the same conversation as the original study.

CARE’s 3rd Annual “Innovation in Sanitation” Award: CARE Bangladesh SHOUHARDO team and iDE

November 19, 2021

This year, we are proud to award CARE’s 3rd Annual “Innovation in Sanitation” Award to the CARE Bangladesh SHOUHARDO team and our partner organization, iDE, for their work to reach poor and ultra-poor families in seasonally flooded regions of Northern Bangladesh with safe and flood resilient sanitation. CARE and iDE have demonstrated the potential of integrating human centered-design with equitable and inclusive market-based approaches to improve supply and demand in the chars and haors. Through this model, the CARE and iDE team has demonstrated remarkable sanitation gains in the face of a challenging, ‘last mile’ context and in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic—after only 10 months of active sales, more than 13,000 households have purchased toilets, improving sanitation access for more than 50,000 people. In addition to significant women’s empowerment gains under SHOUHARDO, CARE and iDE supported the development of an 85-person network of sanitation sales and marketing agents, 60 of whom are women!
