Long-grain white rice

In general terms, the best rice for Mexican cooking is the so-called long-grain white rice; Its characteristics lend themselves to the elaboration of rice with swollen grains and a spongy texture that is so appreciated in Mexican cuisine/calories in mexican rice.

Medium or short grain rice

Medium or short grain prices are much less desirable for this use because their grains become somewhat sticky when cooked, which does not allow the desired consistency to be achieved. The medium-grain varieties are used in the preparation of paella (Spanish dish) and risotto (Italian) precisely because a sticky and (in the case of risotto) even creamy texture is sought.

Parboiled rice

Parboiled rice (called in English parboiled ) and instant rice are also widely sold. Although its use may seem quite attractive to us because it requires a short cooking time, it does not suit us because rice of this type does not tend to absorb much flavor from the liquid in which they are cooked.

An excellent Mexican rice dish contains a rich combination of flavors and aromas (onion, garlic, and often other ingredients). All this richness is lost by shortening the cooking time/calories in mexican rice. In addition, with this kind of rice, the fluffy texture so eagerly sought is not achieved.

A notable exception to the exclusive use of long-grain white rice in preparing Mexican food could be the case of desserts – mainly rice pudding. Due to the creamy nature of this dessert, using some variety of medium or short-grain rice may be acceptable and desirable/calories in mexican rice. Even so, I suspect that the vast majority of pots of rice pudding in the Mexican Republic are currently made with long grain rice – simply because that is the variety that everyone knows and the one found in every store in the country.

It is counted that there are more than 80,000 varieties worldwide, a wide variety that helps choose one kind of rice or another for each recipe.  What is the best type of rice?

Round rice

Round rice is one of the most widespread types of rice, and almost everyone has a package at home. It is a food rich in minerals such as calcium and iron, but also vitamin D, niacin, thiamin, and riboflavin. It contains many carbohydrates, which makes it a widely used food in athletes’ diets for its energy value/calories in mexican rice. In addition, it absorbs the flavor of the food it accompanies, which is why it is one of the most used in stews and rice dishes.

  Basmati rice

Basmati rice, on the other hand, is another white rice widely used in India and Pakistan. It is a very aromatic rice that combines well with the spicy foods in these countries. From a nutritional point of view, its characteristics are similar to round rice, although basmati is a long-grain rice that is very light and fluffy after cooking. In addition to accompanying Indian dishes, it is also one of the most used types of rice for salads/calories in mexican rice.

Brown rice

Brown rice is considered the best type of rice for its nutritional characteristics. Unlike the varieties of white rice, brown rice retains the entire grain, with the sole exception of the outer hull, which is inedible. That gives it particularity, and brown rice is rich in fiber, indicating it for all diets. Wool is more difficult for the body to digest, which causes the digestive system to work longer and consume more calories. In addition, brown rice has other nutritional substances such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which are very beneficial for our bodies/calories in mexican rice.

Nutritionists recommend the consumption of whole grains over refined ones daily for people who want to lose weight. There are thousands of types of rice worldwide, but choosing brown rice will help our body acquire more nutrients that will benefit the body. Athletes who follow some rice diet usually opt for the traditional round grain, but in their case, the choice is determined because it is the best type of rice for sports.

And basmati rice, for its part, is still a variety of white rice highly recommended for exotic cuisines such as India, although nutritionally, it is very similar to round rice.

Five grains of rice for cooking

1. Long grain white

The most undesirable thing when cooking rice is that it “is beaten.” The key is to use grains like this, long, to achieve a puffy consistency and a spongy texture. It needs a longer cooking time. It is the ideal type of grain to prepare the famous Mexican rice.

2. Medium grain white

The Silverio is a variety grown in the southern states of Mexico, which has this type of grain. It is moderately tender, and the grains are separated and dry after cooking. It also has a pleasant flavor, which is why it meets the quality standards demanded by the Mexican consumer in terms of consistency, tenderness, and taste.

3. Short grain white

Although this type is perfect for recipes such as paella and risotto, it is one of the most consumed varieties in Mexico. It has a high starch content, which makes it more glutinous. Its main advantage is that cooking over high heat is fast; it is ready in 15-20 minutes.

4. Integral

Eating healthy has become fashionable, so this could be considered another of the varieties used by Mexicans. It is more nutritious because it preserves the germ that provides proteins and fatty acids. Rice from Morelos with Denomination of Origin has this presentation/calories in mexican rice.

5. Round

Sushi has become famous among Mexican diners. That is why we mention this ideal type to prepare it since when cooked, it has a sticky texture, which allows the rice to compact into a single paste and quickly absorbs the juice of the ingredients that accompany it.
